Wondering What To Wear?

10/3/2013

As a photographer one of the first questions I always receive when a new client books their session is, "What do I wear?" Rule number one: you must be comfortable!  If you are uncomfortable, it will show in your portraits. So yes, you want to look nice, but you also want to look and feel like yourself!

More Tips To Consider:

  • Avoid text, images and logos as they distract from the focus of our session--YOU!
  • Try to wear clothing that isn't too showy. Eyes are naturally attracted to skin so it is helpful to cover up.
  • Coordinating layers always look cute!
  • If you are doing a theme session take into account the theme! Images always look best when the people and backgroud mesh well together. See below for ideas on our current themed sessions!
  • Don't over do the make up! It is easier to
photoshop/correct with less skin enhancing make up. This helps to make sure your skin color is accurate!
  • For groups or families: try to coordinate without necessarily matching. Pick two or three colors that looks good together and agree to wear them. (See
example to the left for some coordinating ideas!) I also enjoy when extended families get togehter and each families is in their own coordinating clothing; this serves as a wonderful way distinguish who belongs to who!
  • For maternity pictures, try to wear clothing that accents that bump! Many maternity clothes are designed to hide the bump but now is the time to show it off! (Also make sure your hands/nails look good as they will most likely be used to showcase your baby belly!)
  • For newborn photos, if the parents want to be in some of the pictures, I prefer neutral colored long sleeve shirts.  Also, make sure your hands and nails look nice  in case I have you holding the baby.  For the baby, not much :)  A diaper is just fine wrapped in some blankets until we are ready.  Stay away from elastic that will leave marks on their skin.

For Our Autumn Vintage Sessions:

For our vintage autumn sessions I recommend wearing coordinating  colors in warm tones. Warm tones include reds, oranges, and yellows. Neutral colors like black, brown, cream, or even dark blue are also a good idea for autumn sessions because they are versatile (meaning you could pose in front of literally anything!) I have two examples of coordinating outfits above that show case warm and neutral colors.

For Our Holiday Portrait Time Sessions:

For our holiday portrait time sessions I recommend many of the same items as in the vintage autumn sessions. You may go with the traditional holiday colors like navy blues or reds which I love! Just make sure if you are doing with the more traditional colors you choose coordinating colors (yes, red and green are traditional Christmas colors, but sometimes they may make photos look too planned or busy.) Above you will see one of my favorite examples of coordinating using blues and neutrals. Also do not be afraid to show off those winter mittens and hats! I love seeing families come in coordinating in tradition MN winter wear!
